Fed by the Bow Glacier in Banff National Park, the Bow River intersects Banff, Canmore, Cochrane, and Calgary in Southern Alberta, and the land it spans has been home to First Nations peoples, including Piikani, Kainai, and Siksika of the Blackfoot Confederacy, Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations for over 10,000 years. The Bow River was named after the bows that local Indigenous peoples made from the vegetation growing along the banks. The Îyâxe Nakoda people call the Bow Ijathibe Wapta, which means “a place where people made bows out of Saskatoon saplings,” and in the Blackfoot language, the river is called Makhabn, which means “river where the bow reeds grow.”
Flowing from steep mountains through the foothills and grasslands, this river is vast, offering everything from the accessible and populated walking paths of downtown Calgary, to tranquil, secluded moments in the Rocky Mountains. It supplies drinking water, hydroelectricity, fishing, and recreation for much of Southern Alberta. The Bow can be peaceful and fierce, and while the river bed remains, the water is always changing.
